Taxing Pop? Is It Reallly The Solution To All of Our Problems?

Piggy Bank or Junk Food; Which Would You Rather Choose?

We all know that drinking too much pop or eating too much junk food would be bad for our health. But, we couldn’t get a picture of how disgusting it is than that video clip I just watched. The clip demonstrated on how horrible it is to drink pop- drinking pop is like gobbling fat! I’ve got to admit, that video did disgust me for a second, but I’m pretty sure it won’t stop me from drinking soda.

I would think that growing obesity in our nation is an epidemic of large proportions because it might cause health issues. That is why I think that getting rid of chocolate bars and candies is a good idea. When the school board and other areas switch junk food with crackers and granola bars, it did decrease the amount of people from buying the food. I think that the government is doing a good job keeping us away from the sweets. Also, many elementary schools have a morning program called regular physical activity, I think that the program is a very good start into getting little kids active and outgoing.

In my opinion, I don’t think that increasing pop or chips tax would bother me as much. I’m not saying I’m crazy obsessed with sweets, so it wouldn’t be a big problem if I buy some from time to time. I think that the crazy tax will just affect some people for a few weeks or so, but when they get used to the price, people would start buying them all over again. It is just how our society is, things tend to increase, such as gas prices, yet, we still fill our cars with gas, right?

Photoshop Gone Wrong!

Photoshop is one of the most amazing software that can turn a simple and boring picture into a WOW! Sometimes, a picture with too much editing and attractions may look bad. Take a look at this picture for example:

Honestly, I really don’t see anything wrong with her before her picture got edited on Photoshop. Sure she may somewhat look a bit younger and prettier, but have you ever heard of the saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”? Well, I have, and I think that she looks perfectly fine in her first photo. I mean, her arm might be a bit thicker in the actual image, but I think it looks way better than that photoshopped stick-like arm.

I truly believe that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ and that no one should ever go through so much trouble just to make themselves seem prettier because someone called them ‘ugly’, or if they think they’re not ‘sexy’ enough. That is what I think Photoshop is trying to tell the world.

In my opinion, I think that the companies are going too far into trying to advertise their products by making their models look better. I see that they’re trying to attract customers by using celebrities or mouth- watering gorgeous people, but the point of their advertisement is to sell their products. And I really don’t see how having a picture of a celebrity has anything to do with it. I think that they should use people who have really tried to products to advertise- that will get the full results.

If the new trend would be for celebrities to go bare faced into the camera, I think it would be good influence on the society. I say that because everyone thinks celebrities are good looking and perfect, but if we have the chance to see what’s under all of that make-up, it may change on what people may think. People may hold more self-esteem when they realize that everyone can look beauty with or without make up or the ‘magic touch’.

Gaming: Is it a Waste or NOT?!

When I was a kid, I would always follow my brother into the arcades to internet cafes to the front of our game consoles and computer screens. I’ve been influenced by ‘pro’ gamers from all over the arcades to over the Internet. I’ve seen the evolution of different types of games improving from one generation to another. The quality and storyboard of the games has gotten better and more games are being put up into the gaming market right now. The market blinds us with the many advantages we see the games can give us, and forgets what the disadvantages may lead to.

The advantages of games are that they can be entertaining and some may be stress-free at the same time. The complication of game consoles has been reduced over the years. Before, we would have big and heavy consoles to carry around, but now, we have the PSP and DS where people can keep them in pockets and carry them around anywhere. Gaming systems has gotten a lot more efficient, with a PSP or a DS, you are able to play games, listen to music, and watch movies. When you play a lot of games, you can improve hand-eye coordination and social skills. For example, if you’re playing xBox live or games that require speakers, you can improve your social skills- or improve your slang (I pwn j00 n00bz). But spending too much time on video games can be bad too.

Sure, the game console designs may look a lot prettier and lighter; it is still bad for our health. Let’s take the Wii for example, it may look like it’s benefitting us by making us swing our arms and legs, but constantly moving your muscles will be bad for your body. Hah, I know what I’m talking about, I have a Wii! I remember playing on the Wii for 3 hours straight then after waking up in the morning, my arms were sore; it felt like I’ve just taken my H1N1 shot all over again. After all, companies just want to make more profit off of us by blinding us with those advantages.

Unilever presents Dove V.S. Axe

Dove Campaign for Real Beauty was established in 2004, it is a campaign used to influence all kinds of ladies around the world. This organization held a program in 2004, 2005, and 2007 to the public asking for their opinions on the different types of women they’d hired. The purpose of it is to encourage and raise the self esteem of women by telling them that they too can be beautiful. The campaign also teamed up with many organizations to support their right for women’s’ beauty. The organization contains NEDIC (National Eating Disorder Information Center) and the ANEB (another eating disorder) in Quebec. I felt really proud of Dove after reading its mission statement; it had really shock and impressed me at the same time. I think the campaign has encouraged and helped many women out there to realize that they are beautiful on the outside and inside. I think that Dove is doing a great job making women realize their true beauty by asking random women from different ages, instead of models. I find it that it has a very good effect in the media because Dove uses different races and ages of women to show the true beauty.

In my own opinion, I think that the Axe Effect Campaign is a joke! Sure, it does make guys smell nice, yeah right… personally, I think the smell of Axe is disgusting and the message the campaign is trying to show us is just sickening. I think it funny about how the society really thinks of women. They think of us like we will praise any men would has Axe on and that we will go crazy for them. I feel very offended from watching the Axe commercial, I take it that way because it makes it seem like women will follow you around and praise you like God because of it. Watching that commercial reminds me of the previous blog I have done. In that blog, there is an advertisement about smoking. The advertisement is quite similar to the Axe campaign- both sickening!

As a ‘parent’ company for two totally different aspects of campaigns, I think Unilever should really consider balancing them. I find it weird and confuse to hear that Dove and Axe are from the same parent company; they are just too different to be put together. Dove focuses on the importance of women’s self-esteem and natural beauty. Dove sees what is best for women and encourages and influences them to find their true beauty from their heart. The Axe campaign is a whole different story; it wants what is best for the company to gain profit. I find it a problem for Unilever because it is just impossible to image those two different types of companies would have such opposing views. I think the ‘parent’ company should try to balance the missions the two companies are trying to show.

ADS OF THE PAST- WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!

Eat! Eat! Eat! Eat Those Lovely Tape Worms!

GROSS! What were those people thinking when they were designing this advertisement? I think it’s absolutely ridiculous if they are trying to convince people that it is good to EAT tape worms to stay skinny. In my opinion, I would say that this ad. is a “1” on a scale from 1 (very inappropriate) to 10 (very appropriate) because swallowing tape worms is equivalent to attempted suicide. Tape worms are dangerous parasites that are located inside a human or animal’s intestines to suck up all their nutrients. Consuming tape worms can kill us because it can steal our nutrients, block our intestines and organs. By clogging our organs and intestines, it may cause some parts to stop functioning, in other words- death.

Keep Those Chemicals Away from Me !

“Blow in her face and she’ll follow you anywhere”, are you serious?! I think this ad is ridiculous, no one in the right mind would want a man or anyone else puff a mouthful of smoke in their face! I think that the ad is just over exaggerating and under estimating women by telling us that women will follow men around if they blow in their faces. If they think a woman would follow them if they keep puffing dangerous chemicals in her face, they are just plain silly.

I Eat Lard, You Eat Lard, We’re a Happy Family...

Wee, we’re one big happy family because we eat lard... NOT! I can’t believe that people will think eating lard will make a happy family; that is absolutely disgusting! Eating lard? Do you know what lard is- its pig fat! The company is trying to sell people pig fat and making them think that it will make their family happy?! Wow, that just made me speechless. Why would anyone want to eat lard over all the other variety of food that we have? Eating lard will make us unhealthy and fat, and when we are not healthy, we might come across these many kinds of sickness and that won’t make us happy anymore.

Doctors Encouraging Us to Puff!

Is that a doctor trying to convince his patients that smoking is good? Wow, now THAT is funny. I always thought that a doctor’s job is to save lives and encourage people to stay HEALTHY! Well, I guess this ad has proven me wrong. That is completely wrong; a doctor will never encourage us into smoking. A doctor will only tell us what is right and wrong, in this case... WRONG!

I think that these ads are trying to convince a specific group of people that they should buy them because it will benefit them. For example, the second ad, it has a picture of a guy smoking and a girl “praising” him. The ad is targeting men into thinking that they will look cool and get all the girls they want if they smoke. In my opinion, I would say that these ads have gone too far, they are all false and harmful advertisements. The ads from the past compared to the ones today, I think that it has improved a lot!
